SSC/LEARN at Carpenter

SSC/LEARN Council Mission:

Carpenter Avenue School is an energetic elementary school where all stakeholders are working together to provide an environment, which will maximize each student’s academic and social success and foster a life-long love of learning.

The School Site Council or SSC/LEARN is the school’s governing body that is composed of 14 representatives, including administrators, and representatives from the PTA and Parents for Carpenter. The council’s primary purpose is to focus on the establishment of local policy planning. We manage the direction and involvement on various issues impacting our school community and wherever appropriate, implement action plans. We make every effort to work in concert with the other school organizations when our agendas overlap.

Our role is to facilitate communication among stakeholder groups at school; which include parents, teachers, administrators, and classified staff. As a result, we can provide a forum for discussion and decision making in a number of areas, such as:

Develop a comprehensive Single Plan for Student Achievement
Staff development within District guidelines

Student discipline guidelines and review and maintain a code of parent and student conduct
Schedule of school activities, events and special schedules (graduation, open house)
Guidelines for use of shared school equipment, i.e. copy machines, computers
Review of designated budgets

Additionally, the Council serves as the forum for discussion and /or mediation relating to any activities occurring on campus subject to decisions made by the sitting members, should appropriate channels for resolution be unsuccessful.

The SSC/LEARN council empowers us and our school. It gives the community the power to transform school policy and invoke change.

How to Participate
There are three ways to participate in SSC/LEARN

You can attend meetings. Monthly meetings are held the third Thursday of each month and are open to anyone who wants to attend – and all members of the Carpenter community are welcome and encouraged to come. Each month, after meeting minutes are approved, they are posted on the bulletin board in the main hallway (outside the office with other announcements) or you can download minutes here from our archive.

You can also add something to the agenda. If you have an item to add to the agenda for our next meeting, please contact Principal Martinez at jmarti14@mac.com or Dana Romick, SSC/LEARN Committee Chair, at dlromick@sbcglobal.net within 72 hours of a scheduled meeting.

You can also nominate yourself to be a parent representative. Elections are held once a year at Back-to-School night and any parent or community member is eligible to run for vacant positions (each term is two years). Candidates need to be willing to come to monthly meetings, will be asked to attend training conducted by LAUSD, and must have a desire to actively participate in the council. Everyone in our school community is welcome and encouraged to participate in SSC/LEARN.
